A woman was hit by a car while crossing Mt. Vernon Ave. in Bakersfield on Wednesday evening. The crash, which happened around 6:30pm resulted in major head injuries. California Highway Patrol reported that a man was driving southbound and became distracted by a bicyclist in the center median. When he looked back at the road, he informed officers, he hit the pedestrian who was crossing in the crosswalk and wearing dark clothes. According to news reports, she was brought to Kern Medical Center with serious head injuries, officers said. They do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.
