A woman collided with a big rig on Highway 330 Tuesday morning, sending two people to the hospital and causing the closure of the highway for about five hours, according to news sources.
The woman was driving her 2011 Ford Explorer at speeds of about 55 mph when she reportedly missed the curve ahead of her and instead continued straight down the road for unknown reasons, according to a California Highway Patrol officer.
The vehicle ended up hitting a big rig truck in a powerful collision that ripped the engine from the vehicle and caused it to spin. In turn, the big rig jackknifed and its fuel tank ruptured, causing a diesel fuel spill on the highway.
The woman reportedly sustained serious injuries to her head and abdominal area and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the big rig sustained minor injuries and was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
The highway was closed for several hours until officials were able to clear the area.
