A major accident involving two big rig trucks has shut down a portion of Highway 80 near Truckee in the high Sierra’s. According to news reports, the crash was reported about 5 a.m. when a big rig truck jackknifed on the highway. Shortly after the accident another big rig collided with the jackknifed rig sparking the hay fire. As officers tended to the big rigs, a crash was reported involving passenger vehicles in the resulting backup on westbound I-80.
CHP officers closed the freeway to allow emergency services to attend to the accident victims. Firefighters were called to the crash scene to extinguish the vehicle and cargo fire. Drivers were ushered to use Highway 20 and surface streets as a detour around the truck crash as traffic backed up for miles.
As a Folsom personal injury lawyer I urge truck drivers to use extreme caution and watch their speed when traveling through mountain passes and down steep grades. The 80 Freeway is notorious for having dangerous turns and an unforgiving soft shoulder.
