A Chico man is in jail on two charges of second-degree murder following a single-vehicle crash in Avila Beach that killed two people.
According the California Highway Patrol, the 21-year-old man was driving a 2004 Saturn Vue in the wee hours of Friday morning when the vehicle crashed near a golf course at about 12:10 a.m. Two passengers, a 21-year-old Eureka man and a 21-year-old Castro Valley man were killed in the rollover accident. A third passenger, another 21-year-old man from Castro Valley, was hospitalized with major injuries.
The driver, believed to be either a student at or alumnus of Chico State University, also suffered injuries in the crash for which he was hospitalized. He was cleared for arrest on Saturday.
According to authorities, the men had been drinking at several San Luis Obispo bars before the accident which occurred when the Saturn was driving west on San Luis Obispo Drive; the driver failed to negotiate a left-hand curve then overcorrected, causing the car to go off the road and flip several times before coming to rest in a grassy area.
The CHP is continuing to look into in accident.
As a Ventura car accident lawyer, I would like to once again express my condolences to the loved ones of the two young men who died and wish the hospitalized man a rapid recovery.
