News reports state that a 4-car collision on Highway 49 in Grass Valley, CA sent 3 people to the hospital with minor and moderate injuries.
In a “bizarre” chain of events, which were reported around 3pm Tuesday, a pickup truck driving southbound, driven by Joshua Hudson, rear-ended a van. Witness Lisa Price said that the man driving the black Toyota Tacoma “didn’t give himself time to stop.”
According to a report filed by California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Ingram, Hudson was allegedly driving at an unsafe speed. Hudson tried to avoid the van, being driven by Denise Reynolds. “(Hudson then) went right through the chain-link fence onto the freeway. IT was probably about 15-20 feet down an embankment onto the freeway,” Price said.
Hudson’s pickup then struck a speed limit sign and sent it across the highway onto the right shoulder. The Tacoma then continued across the northbound lane of Highway 49, directly into the path of a 1968 Jeep driven by Scott Evans. Evans’ Jeep struck the left side of the pickup and spun the vehicle across the center divide and into the southbound lane, eventually coming to a stop on the western shoulder. Evans’ Jeep was “catapulted” upward and eventually came to a stop across both northbound lanes of Highway 49.
Passing slower traffic at an unsafe speed, a fourth driver, Michael Solomon, was driving northbound on Highway 49, according to the report. He approached the accident in his Toyota Corolla as Evans’ Jeep struck Hudson’s Tacoma and tried to brake. But with insufficient time to do so, he skidded into Evans’ passenger side.
“It was a mess,” Price said.
Hudson sustained minor injuries, as did his passenger, David Hudson, and they were transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. Evans was flown by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center after sustaining moderate injuries. According to hospital spokeswoman Robin Montgomery, his condition was still undetermined as of press time. All other drivers involved were reported as uninjured.
