According to several news agencies, an episode that occurred during the Nationwide race at Road America caught the audience’s attention after a minor distraction related to an item all of us carry in our vehicles posed a serious risk to a driver present in the race.
The information found in these articles have revealed that during the early stages of the race that happened last Saturday, a driver attempted to reach to the floor to grab a hold of a water bottle that had fallen from the vehicle’s cupholder and became lodged underneath the car’s pedals while the man was managing to drive at high-rates of speed on a four-mile road course.
While attempting to navigate the four-mile course and reaching for the water bottle, the driver could have been severely injured but instead of continuing with the race, he decided to pull over for a pit stop to ask a crewmember to take down the window net to reach the pedals and remove the water bottle from the spot it had become wedged under. Gladly, this incident didn’t turn into a crash but it could have if it happened to you.
To prevent incidents like this from happening, be aware of the types of objects you carry in your vehicle. Certain items like water bottles, sunglass cases and smaller, loose objects could fall and become wedged underneath your pedals forcing you to attempt to reach to the floor while driving, which could pose a serious distracted driving threat.
