A pedestrian was killed Monday after walking on to Highway 101 and being struck by big rig outside of Salinas, report news sources.
According to reports, the accident occurred near Salinas city limits at Russell and Espinosa Roads. The man walked into northbound lanes of the highway from the eastern side of the freeway. California Highway Patrol officers are unsure of the man’s identity, and it is unclear as to what prompted the pedestrian to enter the roadway.
The big rig, which was described as a blue tractor pulling a silver trailer, did not stop at the accident scene; however, CHP officers said it was unknown if the driver was aware that anyone had been hit.
Northbound lanes of the highway were shut down for an hour and a half while investigators worked at the scene. During that time, traffic was diverted to Boronda Road.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and the coroner will try to identify the deceased man.
I am saddened by the news of this man’s death, and I hope investigators are able to identify him and notify his loved ones as soon as possible. As a San Jose personal injury attorney, I have witnessed first-hand the pain and sorrow of those left behind after an unexpected death like this.
