News sources reported that a 20-year-old Petaluma woman was killed in a car accident involving 2 vehicles on Highway 101 north of Novato early Tuesday morning.
According to Battalion Chief Mark Heine of the Novato Fire District, a van containing four men was traveling northbound on the 101 when it struck the driver’s side of the four-door sedan driven by the woman. After the initial investigation, CHP officials said that the sedan had drifted out of the fast lane toward the median, veered right and struck the guardrail on the slow side of the 101. The vehicle then spun and came to a stop across both lanes. The van, going about 65-70mph, attempted to miss the sedan by braking and veering left, but collided with the sedan squarely. Both vehicles skidded to a stop alongside the center divide.
Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene after extricating her from the vehicle. The four men in the van were treated at the scene and released. The CHP is still investigating the crash but does not count alcohol among the contributing factors.
