Actor Mickey Rooney was granted a temporary restraining order against his stepson, Chris Alber, for claims he withheld food and medicine from Rooney. Alber is the son of Rooney’s eighth wife. Court documents state “Chris is verbally abusive toward Mickey… He yells and screams at Mickey. He threatens, intimidates, bullies, and harasses Mickey. Mickey is effectively a prisoner in his own home.”
According to the American Psychological Association, 2.1 million elderly Americans are victimized every year for abuse that ranges from physical to financial along with neglect. Experts also say that for every case reported to authorities concerning elderly abuse, five more cases went unreported.
According to CBS News, experts also say elder abuse is common among the mentally impaired. Rooney, however, is often described by the press as “sharp-witted.” “All I want to do is live a peaceful life, to regain my life and be happy,” Rooney wrote in a statement quoted by the paper. “I pray to God each day to protect us, help us endure, and guide those other senior citizens who are also suffering.”
As a personal injury lawyer Los Angeles, I’m glad Rooney gained the protection he needed to protect his best interests. If you or a loved one have experience elderly abuse, discuss your case with a personal injury attorney Los Angeles.
