The Tropical Nut & Fruit company of Charlotte, North Carolina, is voluntarily recalling food products containing walnuts supplied by Atlas Walnuts, LLC. Products packaged after November 16, 2010 may be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella may cause serious infections in young children, along with the elderly and those with weakened immunity. Healthy individuals can also be affected by salmonella, and experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Infections may enter the bloodstream and cause more severe problems such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
A list of specifically affected foods, including the “California Mix” by Tropical, are on the Food and Drug Administration’s website. No other products by Tropical Nut & Fruit are affected by this recall. The recall went into effect when the company received reports from a customer which showed a positive result for salmonella. Tests were conducted on the same lot of products and those were negative. So far, no other reports of illness have been received. Customers are asked to return the affected products to the stores for a full refund. Extra questions may be answered by calling 1-800-438-4470.
As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I hope no one else becomes else ill due to the products included in the recall.
